This is in response to a letter to the liberal editor dated 12/31/06.
With all the talk of so called air pollution in Cache Valley, now another liberal loon says there is also "light pollution" of all things. Good crap! Great idea, lets tell people how bright their lights should be! Why not! Everyone around here is told every little step on how to live their life as it is. I'm sure the Bear River Health Department will find additional ways to create more money through additional bureaucracy and Taxes by forming a "light pollution" police and wood burning stove police department. It is funny how all these so called "light pollution" advocates support USU! Last time I checked, USU is the biggest violator of "light pollution" in the valley with the stadium lights. Would North Logan or anyone else call USU on this? Heck no! USU has a different standard. But they want to give us a ticket for having a 100 watt light outside! This is the biggest pile of crap. I would like to see North Logan enforce this! They would have such an uphill battle! When will they have the "light pollution" police? We are loosing our rights around here day by day! I'm starting to think that Communist Russia wasn't this bad!
Letter to the Liberal Editor of the Herald Journal is below...
"Logan must see the light
To the editor:
I feel like Al Gore. In “An Inconvenient Truth” he describes how flabbergasted he was when Congress failed to do anything about global warming after he briefed his colleagues in the Senate on greenhouse gases. During Mayor Thompson’s administration I submitted information about the benefits of better outdoor lighting to the mayor and council of Logan. I expected them to quickly agree that excessive outdoor lighting is unneeded and a waste of money and energy. I am astonished that Logan city has done nothing to curtail light pollution.
Logan city should require that all new roadways and developments be lighted with fully shielded and energy efficient outdoor lights. You can read about these lights at http://www.darksky.org/fixtures/.
Logan should join River Heights, North Logan, Smithfield, Park City, and thousands of cities world-wide, by passing an outdoor lighting ordinance to regulate nighttime lighting. The dome of light pollution above Logan is visible from far away. Why are we burning coal for electricity (adding to global warming) only to waste much of that electricity producing unneeded light? Proper outdoor lighting will also restore a view of the night sky. Your children will enjoy seeing the stars.
