A CALL TO ACTION!

Why You Should Care

I am always somewhat surprised by the issues of which readers of the Herald Journal write. Clearly, if they can see a direct connection regarding something to their lives, then they care more. What I propose here is that many non local issues have a direct effect on us and our lives. Of course taxes would have to be at the top of my list. Americans have become so conditioned to paying taxes that they often do not seem to even think about them. Have you taken the time to read your phone bill or any utility bill for that matter? There are several taxes tacked on that over time really ad up. Most of us are not even aware of what these taxes are for and the origins of their passing into law. One thing is certain. Once a tax is created, even if its supposed reason becomes irrelevant it will continue to exist. The same is true with numerous laws. Once a law is passed it is very unusual for it to be repealed. Let’s look at the automobile. First whenever you buy a car you are assured of paying numerous taxes. There of course is sales tax, but why is there a Federal Excise tax on your car?  Are you even aware of the Federal Excise tax on tires, or the amount of tax on gasoline? Ever year we have to register or vehicle with the county. Actually the list is endless. Besides sales tax, every time you buy something there are a number of hidden costs within that product. Sugar, which goes into a lot of what we consume, is held at a much higher cost, because of Federal Tariffs.

Most leftists are really upset about Bush’s tax cuts. Why? Because they really believe that your money does not belong to you. They really think that much of what you earn belongs to the government and it is only through kindness that we allow you to have what you have. They also engage in class warfare. They always express certain hostilities to people who are better off than a certain median. In today’s HJ (10/21/06) a letter writer is truly worked up about an amendment to the Utah State Constitution. From that letter she has clearly never tried to start up or run a small business. Incidentally approximately 2/3 of new jobs are created by the small business person. She uses as an example that a higher profit business would be exempt from the tax. Her argument is specious, in that a more profitable business would be exempt as much as a less profitable business would be true no matter the cut off point. Some businesses by necessity require more capital investment than others, so what.  Furthermore the more profitable a business is the likelihood of having a more property increases proportionately. Clearly the whole purpose of this amendment is to make starting or running a small business less of a hassle and require less paperwork. I was always appalled when the State would come in a charge me significatn taxes on a very old and used deck or file cabinet. Far more than I could sell it for and no matter how much it has depreciated the tax would still be due. Unless you have operated a small business then you would be ignorant of this.

The news that Bush’s tax cuts have raised the amount of Federal taxes collected has been highly suppressed. They will deny any advantage to cutting taxes, because they believe it is a dangerous precedent which could lead people to believing that high taxes hurt the economy. They love to say that his tax cuts favor the rich without telling you that is becasue the rich pay far more in taxes. It is no accident that most small business owners are Republican or of a more fiscally conservative bent. By allowing the number of employees of government to increase as much as it has skews the power of public employees to effect government policy. It is no accident that members of the American Federation of Teachers or other such unions oppose any law or policy which weakens government spending on public schooling. They consistently demonstrate that the care far more about their jobs than educating our children. That should be a crime.

Peace
