A Call to Action!

Valentines Day

Unfortunately, a day usually celebrated with love is darkened by the hateful acts of a lone individual. Already the usual calls for more gun control are being heard. Both Utah and Federal law make it illegal for anyone under twenty-one years old to own or possess a handgun. In addition, aliens whether legal or illegal are not entitled to own or posses any firearm or ammunition. Therefore the perpetrator had already broken numerous laws before he began his rampage. If a brave concealed carry permit holder had been available this outrage might have been stopped sooner.

Wherever strict gun laws have been passed violent crime has skyrocketed. Scotland/Whales then England lead the world in violent crime. In Australia violent crime has increased significantly as well since they passed very restrictive laws. Canada has twice the violent crime rate as the US. Both violent crime and murder are at a thirty year low in this country, but most are not aware of this. Television news by its intense coverage leads to a false sense of insecurity and fear. Simple answers to complex problems never work!

The most effective thing we could do as a civilization is restrict our youth’s access to violent images. Most children are exposed to the depiction of thousands of murders and other violence by the time they reach adulthood.  Many claim this has no effect on their behavior, but if that is so why do advertisers spend millions of dollars to run thirty second ads if this medium has not effect. As a society we worry a great deal about exposing our youth to images about sex but do not seem to mind when they are exposed to the most violent scenes. Why is that?

Peace

Thanks John for educating us on some of these things. Your last paragraph is certainly true. I believe our society has become numb by the constant sex and violence we are exposed to.

I find it interesting that a lot of people who say that since violent crime is down it shows it doesn't effect them. I pose the question 'Are public school safer?'
